The Campagne d'Égypte (1798–1801) was Napoleon Bonaparte’s ambitious military and scientific expedition to Egypt. Aimed at undermining British influence in India by disrupting trade routes, it began with a successful invasion and the capture of Alexandria. The French defeated the Mamluks at the Battle of the Pyramids but suffered a major naval loss when Admiral Nelson destroyed their fleet at the Battle of the Nile. Despite military challenges, the campaign had significant cultural impact. Napoleon brought scholars and scientists who studied ancient Egypt, producing the monumental Description de l’Égypte. The discovery of the Rosetta Stone during this time enabled the later deciphering of hieroglyphics. Militarily, the campaign ended in failure, with French forces surrendering to the British and Ottomans in 1801.
